Water Works!: 1st-2nd Graders

Our young Scientists will take an in depth look at how water works. We use water everyday, and most of the time we never think about what it takes to get that water fit for use. Campers will make experiments on how water can be created, purified, and best of all, conserved. They will log the results of their experiments, and make a presentation on how these ideas can help our ecosystem and decrease our water usage.

Water Works!: 3rd-5th Graders

Ever wonder where the water comes from when we turn on the tap, and what it takes to get it there? We use water everyday and, most of the time, we never think about what it takes to get that water fit for use. During this camp we will create experiments on how water can be created, purified, and, best of all, conserved. Campers will make large rain barrels, and consider how these can be used at home. They will consider how drought affects the ecosystem here in Georgia and around the world. They will log the results of their experiments, and make a presentation on how these ideas can help our ecosystem and decrease our water usage.

Bridge Building: 1st-2nd Graders

Our young Engineers will adventure into the world of bridge building. They will explore the different types of bridges that are used throughout the world. Campers will make a bridge book, keeping track of the different types of bridges that they explore, along with the Spaghetti bridge that they will construct. Campers will also compare older building materials with newer, more sustainable, materials. Campers will also design a bridge to be placed on campus, using these sustainable building materials. Through this process our young Engineers will discover the wonders of these new materials that are being put to use in their communities. Parents will have a presentation about the bridge that was designed, and why it was used for the space.

Green Builder: 3rd-5th Graders

Campers will adventure into the world of being a green builder. To do this they will have to gain an understanding of green building, and what better way than to ask a builder? Our young Builders will team up to create designs to be created right here on campus. They will consult with the persons wanting the structure, to see if they can create what the persons need the space to handle. They will use all the information about green or sustainable building to make sure that the structure is built sound and green. While researching sustainable materials for this project, campers will compare these to previous materials that were used, showing the differences between the two. Through this process, our young Builders will discover the wonders of these new materials that are being put to use in their communities. Parents will have a presentation about the structure that was designed, and why it was used for the space.

Landscape Designer: 1st-2nd Graders

Let’s go play in the dirt! Do you have fun playing with dirt and plants, then this camp is for you. Campers will become their own landscape design firm. They will create several designs, creating models to choose from. Then they will actually get down and dirty, planting and creating this landscape here on campus. At the end of the week, parents will be privy to a ribbon cutting ceremony. So, come help us make SPSU greener!

Landscape Designer: 3rd-5th Graders

Campers are going to become their own landscape design firm. They will quickly learn the fundamentals of this dirty design work, so they themselves can dig it up. Campers will create several designs and mockups to be chosen from, just like a real firm. Once the design is settled on, they will begin working from the ground up. Part of the design process will include coordinating the design work alongside already existing structures, as well as incorporating a rain barrel irrigation system. At the end of the week, parents will be privy to a ribbon cutting ceremony. So, come help us make SPSU greener!

Eco-Energy: 1st-2nd Graders

Get your motor running, or just flip a switch and you use energy. This camp is designed to show us ways to conserve energy, as well as use different sources to create it. Have you ever thought about a world without fossil fuel? Many people have and, that is why there are scientists out there creating energy from other sources. Our campers will explore energy and all the many different possibilities that are out there to simply power their own toys. They will look at some simple but great ways of creating energy—wind turbines and water wheels. They will learn how these devices are used in history and today, as well as create their very own. So, parents, get ready to be shocked by your kids' understanding of energy!

Eco-Energy: 3rd-5th Graders

Every time you plug in your Gameboy, flip on a switch, or even just turn on the TV, you use some sort of energy. Energy is what makes the world go! This camp is designed to show us ways to conserve energy, as well as use different sources to create energy. Did you know that you can gain energy to power your home from your roofing materia,l or from geothermal energy? Did you know that some power companies gain their energy from landfills? Our campers will explore energy and all the many different possibilities that are used to create this power. They will look at some simple but great ways of creating energy—wind turbines, water wheels, and solar cells—as well as gain an understanding of some of the more complex energy sources. They will learn how energy has been created in the past and is looking to be in the future. So, parents, get ready to be shocked by your kids' understanding of energy!

How Is It Made?: 1st-2nd Graders

This camp puts a new spin on reused and recycled materials. We are looking at the end result, and then wondering how it got that way. Campers will make paper, and learn new uses for old items around their homes. They will learn what items can be recycled, and how to go about setting up a recycling drop in their own home. Campers will also tour a recycling facility to get a hands on feel for just how much we can recycle. Then campers will show their parents just how important reusing and recycling is, as we learn just how much waste can be avoided.

How Is It Made?: 3rd-5th Graders

Ever wonder just what happens to that stuff when it is put in the recycle bins? If so, then get ready to explore “How it is made.” Campers will make paper from several different items that they have just laying around the house. We will also help our young Conservationists to understand how much they can reuse everyday items that are just simply tossed in the trash. Campers will get involved in setting up a recycling drop for their own homes, and gain a better idea for what they can do to help decrease the size of our landfills. They will gain a better idea of all the items that are recyclable as they tour a recycling facility. Parents will be amazed by our young Conservationists' understanding of reused and recycled materials.

Marine Biology: 1st-2nd Graders

Campers will explore the different kinds of marine life, with a focus on those that are right off the Georgia coast. They will also learn about how pollution affects the marine ecological system, and what part we as humans play in keeping it clean. Campers will build models of marine life and experiment using different common pollutants to see the effects. They will also explore the Georgia Aquarium and, using a set of questions, will see just how much our local aquarium is doing to keep our waters clean. At the end of the week, campers will make a presentation to parents about these marvelous creatures, and how we all can protect them.

Marine Biology: 3rd-5th Graders

Our junior Biologists are going to take an expedition into the oceans and seas, to discover all they can about the marine life that lives there. They will discover all the wonderful creatures that live just off the coast of Georgia. They will also explore the effects of pollution on these fascinating creatures, and what part humans play in creating and fixing the problem. Campers will build models of marine life, and exeriment using different common polluntants to see the effects, and try to fix these issues. Children will even dissect several different types of marine life to see their internal workings. Using a special set of questions, campers will head off on an exploration of the Georgia Aquarium, to see just how much the local marine specialists are doing to keep our waters clean and the marine life safe. At the end of the week campers will make a presentation to parents about these marvelous creatures and how we all can protect them.

Microscopic Me: 1st-2nd Graders

This camp puts a new spin on the microscope and, this time, it involves you! Campers will explore cell structure to determine how they are made. They will compare different types of cells to see how they reproduce and how they make up different parts of the body. Campers will also be able to touch and feel the different parts of the body as they conduct their very own disection. They will then make cellular models and present these to their parents to show them just how wonderfully they are made!

Under a Microscope: 3rd-5th Graders

You + Microscope = Infinite possibilites. During this camp, our young Scientists will focus on what makes them who and what they are. They will gain a greater understanding of DNA, as well as exploring cell structures to see just how they are made. They will then, through disection, discover the way different types of cells work. They will work through cellular reproduction, showing the way the body regenerates itself to work in marvelous ways. They will then make cellular and DNA models and present these to their parents, showing them just how wonderfully they are made!

Recyclebots: 1st-2nd Graders

This camp will start off with a little bit of trash. Campers will begin by getting a history lesson of the robot, as well as looking into the robot's future. After that, campers will become Robotic Engineers as they look at different styles of robots and creating their own Recyclebots. Our young Robotic Engineers will keep a log of their findings and their experiments with their own robots, and present their conclusions to parents at the end of the week. This camp is going to remind our young Engineers that, just because it looks like trash, doesn’t mean that it is useless.

Environmental Chemistry: 3rd-5th Graders

Our Scientists will continue their exploration on keeping the environment green, by looking at the common chemicals that are used in daily life. Campers will create cleaning agents, as well as forms of pesticides, that will not harm the environment. They will compare current chemicals used, as well as the ones they create, to see the long-term effects on the ecosystem. Children will gain a better understanding of acids, bases and elements on the periodic table that can cause damage if left unchecked in our ecosystem. Then campers will give a presentation to parents of their experiment,s as well as taking home a boat load of eco-friendly household chemicals to use.
